Understanding how much a funeral should cost can be difficult, especially when you are already dealing with a loss. Creating a plan or budget can be hard if you do not know exactly what you are paying for. That is why, at Beckfords, we believe in being open and transparent, so you can make informed choices without pressure.

This guide explains what typically affects the cost, how funeral pricing is structured, and how to approach decisions with clarity and confidence.

What Affects Funeral Cost?

There is no single answer to the average funeral cost, as every funeral is unique. However, the overall cost will usually depend on:

  • The type of service you choose
  • Whether you opt for burial or cremation
  • The level of personalisation involved
  • Third-party costs such as cemetery or crematorium fees
  • Optional elements like flowers, memorials, or printed materials

Some costs are fixed, while others are influenced by your preferences and external providers.

Cost of Cremation vs Cost of a Burial

One of the biggest factors in how much a funeral costs is whether you choose burial or cremation.

Cremation Costs

Cremation costs are often more straightforward and may include:

  • Crematorium fees
  • Doctor’s documentation
  • Service and venue choices

The average cost of a funeral cremation will depend on whether the service is attended and how personalised it is.

Burial

The cost of a burial can vary more due to additional elements such as:

  • Cemetery fees which vary at each cemetery
  • Grave digging and preparation
  • Long-term memorials or headstones

These additional steps often mean burial costs can increase depending on location and choices.

Main cost categories to understand

To make things clearer, funeral costs are generally made up of two main parts: funeral director services and third-party costs.

Funeral director service costs

These are the services provided directly by the funeral director. Beckfords have an up to date and transparent 2026 price list, available to download here.

Professional services
This covers the overall organisation of the funeral. It includes meeting with your family to make arrangements, handling all necessary paperwork, coordinating with third parties, and managing everything before and after the service.

Collection and care of the deceased
This refers to bringing your loved one into the care of the funeral director and looking after them until the funeral.

Funeral attendance, Hearse and Pallbearers
This is the presence of a funeral director on the day of the service. They oversee the arrangements, coordinate timings, and ensure everything runs smoothly. A Hearse and Pallbearers can be organised to transport your loved one to the funeral service and help carry the coffin into and out of the venue.

Coffin Prices and Costs

The type of coffin you choose can also affect the cost of a funeral.

Options include:

  • Veneered coffins: £695
  • Eco coffins: from £750
  • Bespoke or personalised coffins: from £1,000

Third-party costs (disbursements)

These are costs paid to external providers. Beckfords does not add a markup to these fees.

Typical examples include:

Cremation-related costs

  • Cremation fee (Le Foulon): £777
  • Doctors’ documentation: £248

Burial-related costs

  • Cemetery fees: from £250
  • Grave digging: from £280
  • Headstone removal: from £250

Service-related costs

  • Officiant or celebrant: from £174 to £300+
  • Venue hire: from £197 to £248+

Other costs

  • Service sheets: from £85
  • Death certificates: £40 each
  • Mourners’ cars: from £130
  • Recordings or livestreaming: from £108

These costs can vary depending on your choices and the providers involved. See an example here.

Beckfords funeral packages

To provide clarity, Beckfords offers structured packages based on different needs and preferences.

According to our 2026 price list:

  • Direct funerals, focus on practical arrangements without a service: from £2,865
  • Complete funerals, include a full service with additional support: from £4,300
  • Bespoke funerals, allow for more personalised arrangements: from £4,000+ depending on requirements

Each package includes different elements, such as professional services, care of the deceased, and selected third-party costs.

This structure can help you understand the average funeral cost depending on the type of service you choose.
