Choosing a coffin for a loved one, or for yourself, is a significant part of funeral planning, and understanding the options available in Guernsey can help make the process smoother. While the most common choice remains traditional wooden coffins, there are several alternatives, depending on individual preferences and cemetery regulations.

For those considering traditional options, light or dark wood are a classic and dignified choice and for those who prefer more environmentally friendly options, there are coffins made from natural materials such as wicker or biodegradable cardboard. However, these materials are not always accepted across all local cemeteries, so it’s important to check with us for guidance.

Le Foulon Crematorium has recently confirmed that they no longer accept cardboard or Seagrass coffins for cremation, but it’s important to note that these can still be used for burial in some cemeteries. As each location has different regulations, it’s essential to check to ensure your choice of coffin complies with the rules.

In Guernsey, we currently do not have designated green burial sites, and while burial at sea is permitted, it is more commonly done through the scattering of ashes rather than using a coffin.

As more people opt for a celebration of life, picture coffins are becoming more popular but again it is important to ensure that these options are manufactured up to industry standards.
Whatever your needs or preferences, Beckfords is here to provide guidance and support throughout the funeral planning process, ensuring you make the right choices for your loved one.
